- Kim Zetter and Huib Modderkolk / Yahoo News: An inside mole recruited by Dutch intelligence agents at the behest of the CIA and the Israeli intelligence agency, the Mossad, provided much-needed inside access when it came time to slip the Stuxnet virus onto the Natanz, Iran nuclear enrichment facilities, sources say. Part of the now-famous covert operation known as “Olympic Games, the Stuxnet virus was designed to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program and unleashed some time in 2007 by damaging the nuclear centrifuges at the plant. The Iranian engineer mole. who used a front company to gain access to the facilities posing as a mechanic, was successful in either plugging in a USB drive into the control systems at the enrichment plant himself or infecting the system of an engineer, who then unwittingly delivered Stuxnet when he programmed the control systems using a USB stick. Months after Stuxnet's discovery, Iran had arrested and possibly executed several workers at Natanz under the belief that they helped get the malware onto systems at the plant. It is unclear if the mole was one of those executed.
